Invictus.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud,
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.
Oh dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the mornin’ light.

To bring the balance back, bring it back.
At last the sun is shining, the clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness
the sunlight blinds his eyes.

headphoned ipod theory..

ok, so i was basically thinking about this today whilst walking through the streets of bern in what seems to be the first semblance of a beautiful, oncoming spring - "would the music i hear on my ipod hold the same efficacy in india as it does in switzerland?"
ok ok ok...i know its no fricking mind-numbing, life-changing, globalizing-solving, hunger-ending introspection question; but still. its important. i would be 2 steps short of suicide if i didnt have a constant soundtrack running through my brain in the super-calm and organized life here in these parts of europe.

india - is a fricking club, lounge bar, thrash mental, gangster rap, grunge rock, classical orchestra all in one. And Im talking about how these elements of 'music' roll into one giant culmination just by walking on the streets.. ok for those of you that are thinking of closing this window and looking for more interesting, sensible pastures :), bugger off..im onto something here:) and im going to try and express it.

switzerland is calm. no shit dhruv..what are you einstein?
No man, i mean really really relaxed. I still get an eerie feeling at nights cos i think im walking through some doll house and up in the sky a demi-god is playing with the pieces. India , in its enormity makes you feel like a world in it's own. the vast expanses combined with the pure throngs of humanity make it larger than life.
more importantly, in context to this post, india is music. india is noise:)

case study 1.
The train station
Switzerland: the beautiful voice of amy lee goes through my head with the lyrics and killer simplistic guitaring of the song "broken"...theres always something about train stations. entities come, entities go. lives begin, lives end...new chapters bedin , only to be restarted the next morning. here in geneva/bern/even zurich- its composed, it's theatrical...

India: chai chai chai chai! . the families of 18 setting out a picnic of sorts right bang in the middle of the place where u go to check the charts for your confirmation. the gazillion and one people just pottering around (literally with the 'porters' all over the place) and the smell of a thousand delictable spices swimming through the air...it's a ruckus, it's theatrical:)no my ipod wouldnt work here. the song 'broken' wouldnt be as interesting as the intense fun of allowing oneself to look around. :)

Case study 2
the bus: Swiss buses are like well operated boeings, except on the ground. precise, neat, clean, with a dozen indicators of where you are and where you want to go...you cant get lost even if you want to. people come on and get off, and you hardly get to know,..there's no shoving, there's no pushing. it's cool, the movement from side to side is only to compliment the building speed of the driver to maintain the precision accuracy of his arrivals and departures. the song that plays is dmx's " bring his whole crew" - a violent, straight off the streets (but extremely catchy number) by this gangster rapper with lyrics like "i just love when a ni$$er bring his whole crew, its just a bigger piece of cake for me to chew a whole through". purpose of song playing? kills the monotony of the bus ride a bit, gets me to my destination a little quick.:)

India: abi teri ma ki madarch*d, pakad pakad ke g**nd marunga bh**rike!!! hahahah who the living hell needs dmx when i got the damn eastside noida hood hanging off the back of the delapitated excuse for public transport? (as they shout obscenities that would get dr dre to cover his ears and proclaim 'tauba tauba' :)...these boys would kill if you looked in their direction..not too mention snatch my ipod, break it into 2 , eat half of it and leave the other half for me to stare at just for their pleasure...india is the true land of gangsters man..i miss that so much!:)....the skill and delivery of expletives in my country is so expert and pure.. haahah...bottom line- i don't think id need snoop or tupac or even my current favorite kanye west drop a beat and teach me something about hoods, gangs and the ghetto. india is the ghetto and the palace all in one. it's got the crass and the class...:)..this music doesnt do the fun happening outside justice:).

case study 3
the late night walk along the river
switzerland- bern has a beautiful river known as the aare. it joins up in germany into the main water body- the rhine (note that this blog is educational as well- geography lesson happening !). The city- which is a world heritage UNESCO site (basically meaning you can't mess with the look without getting some insane global permit:)) boasts of this beauty (aare- the river - why arent u paying attention?) that runs all through the main part of the town. Joggers, cyclists , random walkers enjoy it's freshness with winding pathways intersecting it at various points. I take a late night walk and am listening to "love comes and goes from the movie- almost famous; played by stillwater"...fantastic rock song which gets me into a brisk mood as I break out into song without a care in the world.

India: You better have your eyes and ears open baby..cos ur either going to get run over or bump into one of those overweight uncles in a white pyjama letting off some steam after a 4 course dinner of butter chicken , rajma , paneer and 2 plates of raita:)....the streets smell of the unbelievably fragrant" raat ki raani" and the crickets are creating chaos (as much chaos as insects can create) rocking their tunes of shrill ecstacy through the night. No song would compare to the random blasts of the horn of truck drivers making their way through the borders of delhi/noida en route the next delivery; or the wave of music from the apartment on the 6th floor- blissfully ignorant to the sleep patterns of neighbours:)....
india is the land of rock and roll..except its in it's soul..in it's movement..on it's streets, eminating from cows and animals of all shapes and sizes:)...it's everywhere..
i miss you:) and i'll be back soon. you're the hottie that every1 wants to be with :) and we are going to have some great times hun:)

it's ours

yup, despite the sadness that still prevails over the test match loss, India comprehensively wrapped up the series with an almost-clinical win in the 4th ODI today.
excerpts from CNN IBN:

India on top: Dravid's men conquer Multan, win series

The visitors, who had batted brilliantly in the first three matches, failed to reach the target without giving some anxious moments to their fans. Finally it fell on the young shoulders of third match hero Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina to give India the win. RP Singh was the star of Indian bowling taking four wickets for 40 runs in his 10 overs. India leads the five-match One-Day series 3-1 after the successful run chase in the last three ODIs

Next stop, England. The last time these 2 teams squared off there were fireworks galore. I certainly see more flying t-shirts and nail biting matches up ahead. Man this is going to be a humdinger:)....thank go for cricket.

rooting for Mittal!

Survival of the fittest man, thats my obnoxious take on globalization- like it or not.

MITTAL'S STRENGTH IN WEAKNESS: Arcelor's management says shareholders should reject Mittal's hostile acquisition bid because the company is too weak, and it will likely point to yesterday's report of a fourth-quarter earnings drop as further evidence.

Don't believe it.

Its apparently poor fourth quarter is more a sign of strength than weakness, although operating margin fell from 28% to 12% and earnings per share dropped by 62%. Breakingviews (which appears daily in the Wall Street Journal Europe) notes that Mittal has proved itself remarkably resilient even though spot steel prices plummeted by a third in the first three quarters last year. Its second half return on equity was 22%.

It's likely Mittal will still have to sweeten its offer (75% is stock). But Arcelor will be hard-pressed to argue that its shares, at seven times earnings, are too costly. Mittal's strength in adversity weakens Arcelor's position.

hahaha

Great Indian rock

Great Indian Rock 10- Hamsadhwani Open Air Theater, Pragati Maidan , New Delhi,17-19 Feb 2006

you really haven't enjoyed the true masti of a waning delhi winter without 'attending' the mother of all rock shows in the capital- GIR (i.e the great indian rock festival)
some of the best times ive shared with good friends has been at the pragati maidan rocking off to some great indian bands (always accompanied by 500 north easterners shouting for iron maiden without fail year after year:)...id always laugh and say- 'man...just let them play and enjoy yourself'..

anyways...feb 17th-19th this year, i wont be there, but my thoughts will. the line up this year includes:
DAY 1*
Descant
Split
Joint Family
Magdalene

DAY 2 *
Medusa
Prestorika
Cassini’s Division
Demonic Resurrection

I have had the pleasure of seeing live performances of split and demonic resurrection in both delhi and mumbai so good to c im not that out of it..yet:)

The pic btw is of me and my homeboy vasu:) at GIR 03...killer fun it was...killer fun...if i remember right this was just when pentagram was taking the stage after an insane perforance by zero....
and yes i also know that im wearing a blue bandana looking like a grade school punk rocker....HA!....

looking for a job??

so in the world of new jobs, exciting new ventures and limitless possibilities, I present the ultimate...

The job description
ROLE
Superdiplomat and manager for 181 countries.

QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience as CEO, cheerleader, salesman, debt collector, priest are all useful. Fluency in English and French required.

SALARY :$397,245 per annum.

PERKS
$25,000 expenses per annum. Official residence in Manhattan.

The front-runners
Ban Ki-moon
South Korea's Foreign Minister. Age: 61
Career diplomat who has served at the UN and been involved in talks on North Korea's nuclear weapons. Not a household name outside Asia. May have support from US but could run into difficulties with China because of Seoul's military relationship with Washington. He speaks fluent French.

Mary Robinson
President of Ethical Globalisation Initiative. Age: 61
Served as first female President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997 and went on to become UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 1997 to 2002, when the US blocked her from another term. Has said she would not seek the top UN post, but she may be persuaded. America might veto.

Kemal Dervis
Turkish head of UN Development Programme. Age: 57
Former Turkish finance minister, educated in Britain and America, who previously worked in various positions for World Bank, including vice-president for Middle East region. Also served as an MP. Has US support, but Turkey's Nato membership would be a negative factor for Russia.

Jose Ramos-Horta
East Timor's Foreign Minister. Age: 56
Nobel peace prize winner (with Timor's Bishop Carlos Belo) in recognition of their struggle for independence in East Timor. Led a decades-long campaign as spokesman-in-exile. Known internationally from his campaigning days. Probably has American backing. Not a declared candidate.

Vaira Vike-Freiberga
President of Latvia. Age: 69
Serving her second term as President of Latvia and wants to be first female UN secretary general. Overcame strong Euroscepticism when Latvia joined EU. Educated in Canada, and known as the "Baltic Iron Lady", her support for the war in Iraq would make her a controversial choice. Her age could count against her.

Jayantha Dhanapala
Senior adviser to the president of Sri Lanka. Age: 67
Involved in peace negotiations with Sri Lankan rebels and regarded as the best diplomat Sri Lanka has ever produced. Well known at the UN, where he was disarmament chief in New York. Needs Chinese support to be successful. Age is likely to be a factor that counts against him.

Aleksander Kwasniewski
Former president of Poland. Age: 51
Former Communist turned reformer who as President of Poland from 1995 until last year brought his country into the EU and forged closer ties with Nato. Seen as a US candidate - Russia has made it known it does not want a candidate from eastern Europe.

Tony Blair
British Prime Minister. Age: 52
Could be free by the end of the year to take up position with global reach. Adopted UN development goals as his own but decision to ignore UN over Iraq invasion could be problematic. France and Russia could veto. Candidates from permanent members of UN Security Council are unlikely to succeed.

Surakiart Sathirathai
Thai Deputy Prime Minister. Age: 47
The first Thai to earn a doctorate in law from Harvard, he became Thailand's youngest Finance Minister. As Foreign Minister he dealt with the aftermath of the Asian tsunami, and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister last year. Official Asian candidate.

Ok, honestly, if Tony Blair is going for it, Im throwing in the hat as well:)
DC for SG ? I think it has a nice ring to it...:)

Evening TV is back!

woooohooooo..many thanks to the great DG for letting me know of this - the kickass new dedicated Indian news channel delivering live streaming coverage straight to my laptop:)

ok, so what's new?:) board exam givers rejoice- they have a whole 15 more minutes of reading time before giving in the paper..WOW! i mean oh my god thats going to drop the stress and suicide rates of a quarter of a billion youngsters across the country. Good lord- if someone had told me my board results were going to have this little a consequence on the future of my career (sure im being a little cocky and im all of 5 years out of school but anyone out there willing to argue?) I would have slept through the fricking exam and spent more time building my understanding of global corporate HR practises and reading up on UN agencies delivering sexual and reproductive health programs to developing countries. Certainly my life today has a bit more purpose because I had the advantage of wonderful parents that didnt go ballistic over the lack of 95% scores, but for the gazillion other kids in India - if I can say one thing it would be" ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD"- focus on being good human beings, build your network, explore, travel, find your interest and back yourself.
nothing is more valuable than these formative years. a frickin 3 hour exam doesnt define you today, it's not going to define you 10 years from now.

anyways, back to doing what i was doing- which is very exciting btw:)...am providing smatterings of input to the strategy team structure and format with Zuzka and Rob (always fun with these 2 brilliant minds;) whilst browsing the beauty of randomness on the web.

alright, am going back to watching the news- can u believe its been nearly 2 years for me that I havent had a television in my house? best thing i ever did actually (per force or per choice;)

hello , im johnny cash

ok so quite frankly, the only real thing I knew about Johnny cash was through memories of grade school headbanging on KidRock's killer rendition of 'Sad But true' (his version being called american badass with a complete overhaul of the lyrics)which had a line going " I like Johnny cash and grandmaster flash".
sooo , at that point i figured johnny cash was probably the perfect homegrown american boy making soulful country and rock music.

flash forward to 2 days ago:) went to see 'walk the line' and quite simply- loved the movie. reasons? phoenix delivers a stellar performance with some incredible acting and the onscreen chemistry with reese witherspoon was brilliant. the music fit in quite nicely with the movie (although its most certainly not my type) and the presence of jerry lee lewis and elvis in comedic tid bits is heart warming and exciting all at the same time. those were some incredible times....

the direction was powerful with the use of close ups and deep expression capture being the hallmark of what is often a rather intense depiction of cash's drug addiction.
overall id give it a 9/10 for sure and reccommend it to any cine-goers with some semblance of taste.
my favorite line in the movie btw: (when johnny cash is making his comeback and has gotten inspired from the millions of letters he receives from his first place of work- "fullson prison")

Music producer: what's with all the black, are you going to a funeral?"
Johnny Cash : (dressed completely in black with dark sunglasses) "maybe i am"

for this is a happy day:)

47.4 Abdul Razzaq to Dhoni, FOUR, short one down the leg side, Dhoni
gets it away to the fine-leg fence and India have won by five
wickets!
That is a good run chase from India
Sachin Tendulkar set the game up with 95 at the top of the innings
Yuvraj Singh played a superb knock to follow, staying unbeaten on
79 and nursing India along towards the target
Then, in the end, Mahendra Dhoni was the raging inferno that blew
Pakistan away - his 72 off 46 balls sealed the game for India

yup, arguably 3 of the most scintillating one-day players in the current era of the game come together to resoundingly shut out the pakistani attack in the 3rd one dayer:) india takes the lead 2-1 and as always the excitement builds.
bring it on .................

happiness for the NRI:)

love it man..love it. dhoni u rock dude...just take it home now. take it home.

43.4 Naved-ul-Hasan to Dhoni, FOUR, another short one, again down leg,
dhoni does not think twice before pulling down to the fence at
deep backward square-leg! That is poor bowling and great hitting!
43.3 Naved-ul-Hasan to Dhoni, FOUR, short this time and a touch too
straight, dhoni whips that to the fence at deep backward square-
leg to bring up an awesome 50 off just 35 balls under pressure!
43.2 Naved-ul-Hasan to Dhoni, FOUR, very full and quite straight, Dhoni
gets his feet out of the way and plays a brutal drive tyhrough
cover! That is a powerful hit!
43.1 Naved-ul-Hasan to Dhoni, two runs, fullish and on the stumps,
heaved back over the bowler's head for a couple down to long-on

have a drink with me.

come.
have a drink with me.
pour that bourbon..
watch it glitter.
sit besides me
and tell me your dreams,
your fears,
of lost loves.

come
have a drink with me.
take refuge
in my offer
of momentary security.

Come
have a drink with me.
reminisce in nostalgia
ageless
an eternity.

come.
have a drink with me.
let's laugh
at the stupidity.
above it all
is a feeling of maturity...
once again
a momentary security.

come
have a drink with me.
the flame joins us
never one to miss
such a self destructive
ruckus.
puff on it..
like a dying man's wish...
and then smile in the knowledge
of the nicotine's fetish.

come
have a drink with me.
no more?
Just one more!
Blasphemy
"for the love of the lord!!"
ok ok ....
maybe just..
one more for the road.
come
have a drink with me.

beautiful day..

the sun is out.
the sky is a crystal blue
i see the mountains in the horizon.
the interspersing green and the rivers...
but answer me this
o dear mother of nature....
why does it not uplift me??
why do i see clouds in the silver lining...

morbid...

for if my soul was to leave my body today....this would be the song my lips would burn with :)....rediscovering metallica's classics. pure. honest. painful.

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can’t be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he’s gone

No one but me can save myself, but it’s too late
Now I can’t think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye

time to think.

think of what you've done.
think of what you're about to do.
know that the former was in your hands.
know that the latter may not.
reflect.

holding back the tears

Thinking of the fear I’ve had for so long.
When somebody hears,
Listen to the fear that’s gone.
Strangled by the wishes of pater,
Hoping for the arm of mater,
Get to me sooner or later,

Nothing ever could, yeah.
I’ll keep holding on,
I’ll keep holding on,
I’ll keep holding on,
I’ll keep holding on.

Chance for me to escape from all I know.
Holding back the tears.
There’s nothing here has grown.
I’ve wasted all my tears,
Wasted all those years.
Nothing had the chance to be good,

Nothing ever could, yeah.
I’ll keep holding on,

I’ll keep holding on,
I’ll keep holding on,
I’ll keep holding on
So tight.

this day.

remember this day forever dhruv. remember it. dont ever forget it. just remember it. 10 years later when you look back, you bloody well remember it.

mumbai about to rock!

did the current/ex/wannabee mumbaikars hear about this?
man my reunion with sam and the rest of the most rocking city on the planet is going to be lived here:)

Mumbai rocks
The arrival of the Hard Rock Café, an international theme-restaurant chain, in Mumbai in January has generated some excitement. A spectacular party is planned for February at the official launch of the branch, the first in India, at its sprawling 560-square-metre midtown location. The venue, housed in a cavernous former textile mill, boasts the highest ceiling in town, split-level spaces and two giant bars, where rock memorabilia such as Keith Richards's guitar and Elvis Presley's trousers adorn the red velvet-lined walls.

Although the chain's standard fare of burgers and fries dominate the menu, local cuisine, such as prawn curry, also features. Hard Rock may soon be followed by similar chains: Planet Hollywood could arrive later this year.

Do you guys realize in a few years that people are going to be sporting
Hard Rock cafe- mumbai tshirts?

:)

george is on....

not since paul oakenfold's legendary performance live in oslo (part I) have I gone so crazy over a techno house album.
All hail the sun god for introducing me (once again) to this artist known only as deep dish with the album: george is on.
From a classy club remix of dreams (fleetwood mac - and you know they are my favorite band of all time) to the mind numbing 'sexy III' all the way to the killer sacramento. this album has me dancing on the streets in geneva. the wierd stares continue.
im in my daze
quite a haze
dont stop to stare
just drop some praise...
for the ultimate craze...

damnit

damn, anyone else having problems posting?

this one goes out to the 2 that i love.

Grow old along with me
the best is yet to be.
-Robert Browning

23 years. :) and still as fresh and vibrant as that of when you probably first met. I would have liked to have been a common friend to the 2 of you (back in the day), I think it would have been fun to see the 5 years of courtship :)

Happy anniversay you guys. I miss you. Just so you know, after over 2 months of gloomy, greyish weather, the skies have opened and the sun beats down in the beautiful city of geneva as I have never seen before. Maybe it's a sign.

Your loving son,
dhruv

happy bday

this was exactly one year ago. the birthday girl is the one with the cake filled face, pity because she's actually quite cute:) . We were inaugrating our new apartment in vikhroli at the start of our respective terms as the core organizing team for the largest and most diverse youth conference in the history of independant india.
and it was her bday.
Happy birthday sneha:) hope you have a wonderful day of smiles, laughter, randomness, good friends and time with family. you deserve it. and on a closing note I ask you, can you believe this picture was taken one year ago? where did the time go? where? :)
they were good times.

chiller weekend

energized. watched reality bites with her. "you , me and 5 bucks"- her favorite line, i like it as well. although i dont think i could ever be that preppy. was very nice nevertheless. . got some music from ananda and realized that i have to say goodbye to her as she heads off to israel to live the other part of her life/ amazing..
the wishes, confidence and support continues to roll in from old acquaintences, friends, well wishers. thank you. roi promises to get me drunk either way. i look forward to that. last year in bucharest was hilarious, none of us could skate, KS insisted on making every1 fall down. robin had it the worst hahahaha. dhanur is my bro, i think till we're 80 and can hardly hear we will still be sending each other cool tracks to listen to. pandora.com rules. seperation doesnt. sometimes the future can be confusing. planning your life at 22 seems futile and cause for anxiety all at one time. they told me i just didnt seem 22, i was too mature, too smart, too confident. i shrugged it off, didnt really think so..but then what the heck.
got some nice books today- a jeffrey archer and the indian epics retold by r.k narayan. the ramayan is still the most bad ass epic of all time. did you know the mahabharata is longer than the illiad and odyssey combined? indian history and culture is so rich.
downloading some music now. will be time to sleep soon.
go to Bee's and robs blog for an insight into our fantastic dinner at what is known as the 'blind cow'. You are served your dinner in complete pitch darkness by blind waiters and waitresses. you cant see a thing and are left with only your belief in movements and the trust of those around you. was a fantastic experience, and my roast duck was scrumptious. Was very funny when we left, I decided to yell Bye everyone, this guy on my right (i think) yelled back- 'was good seeing you' hahahahahaha dont you love a good sense of humour?

thank god for babies...

they are disarming arent they? little kids i mean. sitting in an inter-city train on my way to a meeting, this adorable little blond-blue eyed boy sits in a tram chomping on a biscuit with his mother looking dotingly on. I wait for the right moment and make a funny face at him just when his mom isnt looking (i guess im still a kid at heart at times as well)...he giggles and ends up drooling...:) his mom catches the moment and gives me a wide smile. I smile back, not only to return the gesture - she's also pregnant. i guess i feel like saying congratulations but at the end of the day we're still strangers arent we?

closer

Closer- one of the most avant garde and psychotic movies I have ever seen left me with a glaze in my eyes and a feeling of despondency that is inexplicable.
Got the movie through Bee (who got it from Aida) and am I glad I didnt see it with my significant other. It was mind numbing. A story of passion, love, betrayal, extremities and downright demoralization in my opinion- the all star caste (julia roberts, natalia portman and Jude Law) were brilliant but much too intense.
Anyone seen it? Brace yourself if you're planning to watch it, not my idea of sunday relaxed viewing.
I need a shot of vodka and a quick telephone call.
This is the power of being alone and in an environment not of your familiarity. Disturbing thoughts can come from all around but escaping them isnt all too simple. Grasping for a feeling of settledness, grasping thin air by the end of it. Most ironic- the soundtrack of the movie started and ended with the blowers daughter.
