DID-IT

11am on a cold, blistery and snowy day in Bern, Switzerland. I sit with my legs stretched out and laptop ironically on my lap:) looking out to the beautiful parliament building and cathedral that define the 'skyline' of this gorgeous city. All I can really think of-is the last 4 days, which have undoubtedly been the most satisfying 'conference' experiences in my life. I dont know where to start and i dont know where to end. My body aches and screams at me for more sleep; but my mind is filled with a thousand images and conversations which make me want to smile, pick up the phone and generally make me want to get into action at the speed of light. I am sure some of you reading this know what im talking about.

Anyway, about the conference. The group picture is that of the facilitator team that comprised of very experienced aiesecers from ireland, india, macedonia, poland, romania, belgium, malta, slovakia , kenya and ofcourse switzerland.
Learning number 1 - bringing together such a diverse and international faci team for an agenda that can be simply defined as insanely complex would be beyond the reach and desire of many countries. But it just goes to show how a culture, when set for success and belief- can drive countries to raise the bar higher and higher every year. DO IT is part of swiss and international folklore. I knew it last year when I was a facilitator, I know it even more this year.
The organizing team this year was that from LC 'Lausanne' who have escaladed into becoming one of my favorite groups of people here in Switzerland. Hailing from the french speaking part of the country- these guys were sweet and hard working, not to mention funny and smiley at the same time:). A huge team, that needed to coordinate activities for 6 parallel agendas, about 15 different externals on one day- demanding delegates and events that ran way past midnight- I raise my glass to say 'salute'.....what a bunch....i want to go to lausanne once more to just hug them.

hmmmmmmmm what else? the conference ,on a professional note was satisfying to say the least. I was involved in directing discussions with a group of rather successful and progressive 'leaders' - i.e people who had taken up Executive board positions in thier local committees. A huge hug and thanks to chris, robyn, flo, aida, ananda, alizee - u guys are too cool for school....memories of days back in my LC - Delhi IIT flashed back so so so so so many times at this conference...it was awesome.

Fiesch rules. Theres no doubt about that- the conference site was breathtaking - flanked by the mountains, with snow enveloping the military base- one just needed to step out of the main plenary to get a view of a white sky and a land 'purified' by the gods in a way so serene that silence would very often be my only form of appreciation.
It irritates me that I took such few pictures at the conference. None with my team- the Member committee of @ in Switzerland- which I want to kick myself for. Some of the funniest times ive had were with the 4 of these crazy guys ealry in the mornings when we would be woken up at an unheard of hour like 7am, as well as the mad rush to get ready for Awards nights, global village events and parties all in the space of 4 hours....hahahaha...'robs rendition of pulling a cat out of his ass' had me in splits....one of the most pleasurable set of people Ive had the experience of working with- I hope they are congratulating themselves at this very moment :)

AIESEC in Switzerland - even after being here 2 months, having understood this country quite well and facilitating last year, never ceases to surprise me. The LC challenge evening was the example - I had my mouth mostly in a wide jaw -dropping expression (this was when I wasn't on stage with Patrick siffert- by far the funniest and wittiest swiss guy i know)...the theme this year was 'evolution and major events in history' and oh my god did these guys outdo themselves. From lavish costumes of the roman empire, to armours and swords for the knights of the round table, to dancing slaves and mummies from egypt....i was in splits....unfortunately dont have any pictures right now- but will positively upload them. It was to die for.
This posting, conversations I have and pictures I share ; none of them can fully describe just how amazing this conference was . I saw tears, frustration, friendship, laughter, respect, joy, ambition, learning and pure satisfaction of being alive - in a lot of people around me and ofcourse myself. What more can you want? So many things to do from here, so much excitement about the future....all I can say is, ' What am I waiting for ?' :)

the end of the internet

the end of the internet.
hahahaha got this from dhanur's blog lol, some1 out there has a sense of humour:)

europe be-warned.

the man, the ultimate in all things supreme, classy and downright badass descends down to belgium 25th november 2005- the date shall forever be marked as an apocolypse of unheard of proportions. My partner in the to-be-raised european anarchy takes his seat in the cockpit:) (finally) with a traineeship with inBev for 1 full year. KS....they have allowed the cluster of chaos to re-form in the land of the free, the land of the sublime - do they know what they have done ? do they know ?
europe has been warned. sound the sirens. :)

wtf mates

DG my bro sent this to me yesterday in what has been a series of the most insanely funny emails in the history of all mankind....:) made my days reading the 'updates' as you may call it from kartik, dandy and sam...:)
anyway, this is really old but undoubtedly one of the funniest things iver ever seen online...wtf mates?

answered

ones true calling. one's direction. the challenge. the ultimate. the mountain. I found it last night. Chills down my spine and ecstacy in every step. The question is answered....what next? I know now. My friends and my foes, fear not- for in due time, knowledge shall arrive to thee.
No time now to sit and wonder,no time for the idle ponder, the battleground rumbles and calls my name... for I am ready....as shang tsung once said:) let mortal kombat begin!

heart wrench

squeeze, shatter, maul, maim...
my body's engine.
I hear the frames play 'when the heart just stops'.
Its the live version.
Reminds me somehow of a pub in dublin and a wierd irish guy named mark.
I close my eyes.
Even the night
seems
to have too much light.
The pain.
Searching for answers,
even though I have mine.
Fighting the tears
even though I have none.
I try to cry.
Why can't I ?
Today could be any other day,
but it isnt.
Last night was like any other night.
But it wasn't.
I wander the virtual hallways
looking for random musings
that might strike a chord,
facing my demons,
is something i don't think i can afford.
futile, despondent 2 liners reach my cellular device,
i respond.
technology has robbed us of the unknown.
or has it gifted us safety from the darkness?
it could never cure the pain of a heart wrench
a heart wrench
heart wrench
wrench.

where did it all go wrong

you know that feeling you get
you feel your older than time
you ain't exactly sure
if you've been away a while

do you KEEP the reciepts
for the friends that you buy
and ain't it bittersweet
you're only just getting by

but i hope you know
that it wont let go
it sticks around with you until the day you die
and i hope you know
that it's touch and go
i hope the tears dont stain the world that waits outside
where did it all go wrong?

and until you've repaid
the dreams you've bought for your lies
you'll be cast away
alone under stormy skies
alone under stormy skies

but i hope you know
That it won't let go
it sticks around with you until the day you die
and i hope you know
that it's touch and go
i hope the tears dont stain the world that waits outside
where did it all go wrong?

but i hope you know
that it won't let go
it sticks around with you untill the day you die

and I hope you know
that it's touch and go
i hope the tears dont stain the world that waits outside

but i hope you know
that it won't let go
it sticks around with you untill the day you die

and I hope you know
that it's touch and go
i hope the tears dont stain the world that waits outside

where did it all go wrong?

fidelity for thought...

finished reading high fidelity a few days back, and have to admit-the book depressed the living hell out of me in various parts. sure its funny, ironic, sardonic and very very british - the book brought out some low points whch reminded me of disturbing thoughts linked only to when i think i was 16. the main protagnonist reminded me terribly of how we used to assume and look at relationships post puberty, and the fact that he's 35 and still going strong was scary....
a well written book nonetheless and certainly an interesting read- ive heard the movie is quite good as well and jack black plays the role of 'barry' who is undoubtedly my favorite character in the book :) ...
what i did like about the book though is the way nick hornby has brought out the vague insecurities that exist in the main character, and the honest yet feeble attempts to address and communicate them....men are strange for sure and at times i think more complex than we let ourselves imagine and admit....read the book, you'll know why im waxing eloquent like dr. phil in oprah....
anyway....on other news, still need to finish an equal music, the wave of depressing books doesnt stop:) but vikram seth writes so bloody beautifully..hard to resist...and in a meeting with the ceo of an awesome company called getAbstract ; me and my bro CK got 2 year free subscriptions of access to the summarized best of published works in every conceivable field - from management to economics to modern literature to philosophy...its a party! It looks like an extremely interesting market that these guys are looking to get a stronghold of worlwide- and what's even cooler? we raised an AIESEC iNternship with them for 1 year starting february 2006...rock on:)
tori. the bubbly powerhouse President of AIESEC in Pakistan arrived yesterday, ripun today. and the rest of the facis all start streaming in over the weekend- so excitement builds big time....DO-IT approaches babayyyyyy....

hoppschwiiz!

ok ok, so im an indian:) and i love cricket...but the pleasure of success of your country in sport is seen throughout the world...and the last 2 matches of switzerland vs. turkey were very special; the fantastic result being that Switz have gone through to the world cup! which is supremely exciting.....
i was at geneva with rob and we were standing outside a bar opposite the railway station , (notice outside as there was no space to get in)...and the thrills and shouts could be heard a mile away....
Switzerland came through , despite having lost the away game to turkey 4-2 (as they had beaten them 2-0 in the home game that was played in Bern- where I live btw!)....; people were honking their horns and generally making a ruckus i am all too accustomed to. Got an sms from CK :) at midnight saying 'yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay we are through to the world cup'' and I felt so happy I had to call him to congratulate him .... way to go !...germany 2006 is going to rock.
What pisses the hell out of me though has been the reaction and crazy behavior of the two teams beating the crap out of each other after the game...read about it here

On other informational news, Countries that have gone through to the world cup are as follows:

he's here

:) my bro, my main man...has joined the bandwagon...finally having reached levels of deep introspection- he has started off with a very well written first posting... :) - the sum of all emotions...amen!

aur kya ho raha hai?

well, u know im getting more and more european as each day goes by :)....friends here have been filling me in with some killer german rap and rock (and no i dont mean rammstein!) ...
get a load of some of these bands = sonne manneheim, xavier naidoo, freundreskreis and fettes brot (get a song by them called jein :))....
Also, song of the week undoubtedly goes to 'the time is now' by moloko...one of those tracks you want to dig out and listen to in any mood....

on other news, the structure task force finished last weekend, extremely challenging and interesting. The dates are counting down to one of the most amazing national conferences im going to be part of - DO IT 2005- huge international faci group...big delegations, 2 chairs and ofcourse a highly energized MC team here in Bern!
also got a nice update from my CC colleagues who wrapped up their responsibility of presenting to AIESEC in India the output and wrap up of IC , not to mention the surplus from IC - 82 lakhs! (thats over 160,000 euros for those who dont know the conversion :))....i sit here, many miles away and smile:).
prague plans are concretizing...put in my papers for the czech visa today....theyll be mailing it to me via post (how convenient is that?)....
what else what else what else? isch guet...basically isch guet...

hahahah

every once in a while u get a funny forward:) although im actually scared if this could be true:)

------------------------

European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the
silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl rite n styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

scott adams rules and thats all thats there to it.

i mean he does....he simply rules.

teach the kids the right way!

read about carl schramm in this excellent article yesterday..., what was cooler however was the online entrepreneurship game hes created with disney...its a blast to play!...i only just started it, and its basic at most areas in terms of the pointers and knowledge it aims to build in young people; but holy mackeral- a young student finishing school or in his first year of uni could so utilize and enjoy this at the same time!....van chitgough loving the internet more and more everyday...:)

hangin out at the UN..

Attended a presentation from the UNDP on an interesting new publication called 'The New Public Finance' - Responding to Global challenges'. It seems to offer highly relavent suggestions for adapting public finance to the conditions of globailization. Being a private sector guy myself within the UNFPA, there wasnt a lot of value add for me personally but atleast I learnt about a new relavent area of the UNDP's functioning:)
soooooooo..after that I was just walking around the palatial corridors that is this place..came across some killer architecture- although I still cant figure out what this is exactly...

foundation stone?

this- outside the main UN building (about half a km down the gardenpath)

the palace

in terms of architectural composition and pure feeling of 'grandeur' the UN HQs - the palais de nationes kicks ass in about 123 different ways....below, the main entry with all member country flags...

Raclette rules!

ok the swiss being extremely formal and generally classy people who dont attack food like it was 3000 B.C. (which i have no problem with btw- considering i know i do it at times when im ravenous and a tandoori chicken is placed in front of me)- they have devised lovely little contraptions that aid the social process and suit the diverse palettes that comprise its geograph :)
raclette, another masterpiece as seen below consists of a 2 layered grilling/frying pan...the top of which you place vegetables, bread, basically the assorted acroutrements that go with ur dish - till it gets crisp. and below, is the area for adorable little frying pans where you place square shaped pieces of cheese on top of a low electric grill. The cheese melts down :) and you put it together with the bread, vegetables, peeled potatoes (previously boiled) and wash it all down with the addiction of the country - i.e good wine.
Dies ist köstlich!!!!!!!!!...so much fun ......cant wait for my next raclette dinner, although mental note suggests one should build up a real appetite for a dish with this level of required patience and taste :)

dhruv the tool man chitgo.

ok so it doesnt sound as cool as tim the toolman taylor- but its close enough..i made a full bloody wardrobe with seperate compartments AND I made a lovely little side table..with drawers and everyhing. IKEA rules...u get the coolest stuff at its most reasonable....hahahaha but building this stuff was fun.
a) u get to drink beer and given lots of food by the 'woman folk' in this case niharika
b) you get to feel the satisfaction of having built something from scratch- its very urgg arrkk neandarthal type masti..

so what's been up?

loads actually, havent blogged in a few days and have had some pretty eventful events that need to be expantiated upon to the world at large...why? cos it happened...and it needs to be said...
since im in the mood for inspirational quotes and i know a lot of you reading this need it heres the quote for the day
Carl Sagan once said "If you want to bake an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the Universe" . once again ...who is carl sagan? and what relavence does it have to this posting? I could be a smart ass and say I am recreating my own universe in this fantastic inter-cultural professional and personal learning experience blah blah blah....but the actual truth is that it just sounded cool.

okkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, enough of that...what have i been upto these past few days? ive been havin a blast...niharika's entry into switzerland has required me to step up my brilliant carpentary, negotiation, sleep-deprivation and multi-tasking skills...but a good woman will make you do that right?:) The last couple of weekends have been mixed with carrying 20 kgs of unassembled furniture up 4 flights of stairs along with a half tawainese-half swiss chiller :) (jih-ming my main man - this one goes out to u :) to raclette evenings in fabulous apartments to gangster clubbing with CK and Gio to long walks around the palais de nations (UN Headquarters- after 45 mins i had still probably seen 0.2% of the place) to asian fondues with soup and strips of beef and celebrating my birthday!
yes its all very exciting I tell you and since I dont care enough for chronological orders...im just going to get random and post pictures of some of the stuff im talking about above...enjoy mortals!:)

Nothing is worth more than this day. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Lol! I dont know who this guy is but he sounds important..found this quote today of all days and really liked it ....
so basically, what this means, is that ive now spent 8030 days, 192720 hours and 11563200 minutes on this planet ...thats quite a bit huh?...
lol...well enough calculations....heres wishing me a happy birthday...plan is to head home and get some drinks with friends :) I know I should say something philosophical and deeply meaningful...but what the heck- cant think of anything right now...on a cooler note here's also wishing my beautiful aunt- sima mausi! a very happy birthday....
and secondly...happy birthday to the gorgeous (now pretty much indian :)) adrienne van dok...she's in mumbai right now and im hoping she's having a killer time.
oh yeah- scorpions rule!

the swiss lifeline

the card on the left is the 'carte de legitimition' symbolizing (coolly enough) that I am a legal resident of Switzerland for my stipulated period of time-phew ! its finally here. I put in my papers for the schengen visa today and need to pick it up on Friday:) Dusseldorg and Koblenz here I come !:D.
The one on the right is the most kickass 'pass' I can imagine- the 'GA' entitles me to free travel all over switzerland by any form of public transport at any time :) - buses, boats, trams, trains, even elevators up to the top of churches!...now thats convenience. and if you've seen public travel in switzerland you'd wonder why anyone would be stupid enough to have their own car...

Testing:)

Testing…this is the new killer thingamajig from blogger( can post straight from MS word….very nice.

:)

continuing from the below given post- it's done quite beautifully (although im sure not intentionally); one enters this long ass tunnel that goes on for a couple of miles and as large as lake geneva is, prior to this you don't see it. But you suddenly whip out of the darkness and on your left is this....

my drive to work.

well not really a drive..but couldnt help but brag of how awesome my view (various views actually) is in the train from Bern-Geneva. FYI , my train stops at 2 other major cities - Fribourg and Lausanne in that order...and just after you hit Lausanne this inexplicably killer view comes out of nowhere to attack you with it's beauty. Its the Lake Geneve :)..with the mountains behind it... Posted by Picasa

diwali..

:)...i sit here, many thousands of miles away in an office in Geneva and smile to myself...whats happening in India right now?

- my mom is probably putting teeka on my dads forehead and is whispering silently a prayer to bless our family and our future. She is praying to lord siva and they both sing in unision a beautiful and simplistic poem of happiness and success. My house in kirti apartments, mayur vihar is probably lit up with candles, diyas and a festive flavor , undoubtedly some of the neighbours and well-wishers have dropped by to give some kaju, pista and badam (the delicious sweets and dried fruits that do the rounds during this time of the year)... my dad will be silently praying...for a man as self-made as him...i would always admire him for the dedication for which he would pray...and touch his forehead to the floor...I would try to copy him with the same kind of seriousness but never could...my mind always racing to when I could run out of the house to chill with my friends at a local diwali party, jokes and nice eats:) i miss it, for one fleeting moment, i almost wish I could be with my parents to give them a tight hug and wish them a happy diwali...I know I will be in their thoughts...

- kirti apartments is probably rocking to some obscene bolywood number :) the gazillion kids that now infest the beautiful complex would be making enough noise to bring the house down- but no kid would be reprimanded for that tonight. the fire-crackers will burst, the bijli bombs and annaars going many miles into the air...and well dressed men and women will do the rounds of their friends houses with gifts and well wishes. The city will be lit up...figuratively and literally :) ...

- elsewhere, yuvraj is probably 1500/- bucks down at a game of cards :), sethi and shikul are probably the same number up and laughing their ass off cos its nowhere else but delhi where the gambling can take such an unusually bonded and friendly form....
- kalra is somewhere in NYC:) hopefully reading this and sharing my emotions and thoughts..

-neha is still at work in Zurich, her mind racing with the images of her first day of work...undoubtedly she will return home, late tonight...missing a bit of the attention and wonderous atmosphere of her diwali back home...
- all the indians in the various parts of the world..following their own unique rituals-praying to Lord Ram, his kingdom of heaven and the mythology that has brought peace and power of purpose to the countless generations of indians across the world.

far far away from the motherland..i still think i feel the electric nature of this amazing festival..how many years i took it for granted..today in another part of the world-serene, soft and quiet in my surrounding..I can almost hear the sounds of firecrackers and young children intersecting to evoke in me- a smile.
After some years, it ceased to be about the crackers and the idiotic wasting of money, it was about family, it was about friendship and a feeling of triumph for all the successes in the year...today..i feel more happy with my position in life than I have in the past...comparitive only to when I was undergoing my tremendous experience in Bombay on the Indian MC....and wish , grudgingly that I could share it with my parents....
BUT, despondent is not the flavor of today..i have wished my UNFPA colleagues a happy diwali...given them a lowdown of the festival (if only in brief)..completed another kickass day of work, and am on my way to meet my colleagues for a dinner with the local committee (Lausanne) organizing the biggest national conference in Switzerland at the end of november.
So :) whats missing ? lighting a small candle i think:) can be arranged for at home...whats not missing ? friends, success, a feeling of happiness, belonging and color..its been a beautiful day here in geneva...the autumn leaves weakening to the ever chilling desire of mother nature and falling ever so softly in the panoramic ups and downs of this country.
As I passed the lake geneva this morning, I saw the single ray of light flash upon the crystal blue...and whisper to myself- happy diwali...

trying to am'bush'

read this on the economist today....I can't believe it. Story reads that Bush: has nominated a staunch conservative, Samuel Alito, to the Supreme Court. He does so immediately after the toughest political week of his presidency, with his approval ratings at their lowest level in five years. I and the rest of America is wondering: Will seeking a battle with Democrats shore up his political base or leave him further weakened?. Idiot...he's going down.
