dad I understand now...
How many of you (when younger or even recently) have gone up to your mom/dad/elder relative and made them hear some bad-ass (in your opinion) remix of an old classic? Be it the Eric Prydz 'Proper Education' remix of another brick in the wall or the latest 'lets dance' (david bowie super brilliant track) remix by Hi Tack
If you've been brought up on a steady stream of insanely phenomenal music or even half decent music of any genre then you're sure to have been less then pleased with the response your elders may have given of "son, this track was a hit even before you were born". When this was said to me then, I would think to myself "oh god, what does that have to do with anything?, it's a pumpy track with a lot of movement, what does it being from the classic era diminish it's value today?"
A few hours I learnt exactly what and how it does.

"The Chain" Is one of the greatest songs of all time written by Stevie Nicks; an individual who hails from arguably the most legendary band to have been borne out of the last quarter of the 20th century- Fleetwood Mac, the amazingly simple lyrics combined with a base line that could drive a person crazy has had people of all ages and races humming along with a sense of unearned knowledge and contentment unlike any other.
Today, on the 95.0 FM channel, a enthu-cutlet RJ goes through the motions with a popular show called top 8 at 8 where the 'lucky' winner that guesses what the number one track wins a special prize and mention from the channel. Forget the fact that getting a mention on the radio channel is orgasmic enough, just guess what the prize is..

my god- someone pop open the bubbly. I hope the listener had a heart attack with the only possible return to life being the sight of the holiest of dates on his new calendar when he realized he was finally..A LOSER.
Anyway, moving along from that...the pumpy RJ says "this is one of my favorite tracks - it's a brilliant song called 'wind blow' by Bone Thugs N Harmony. I'm listening to this whilst driving down the crowded road leading up the south-ex flyover in front of Ansal Plaza and the bumper to bumper traffic is allowing me to pay more attention then usual to the music being churned out. Upon hearing of the RJ and lucky winner's selection - I do a little dance in my head. Bone Thugs N Harmony are nothing short of gods gift to raw, earthy and pure rap served up at a frenetic pace. WIth countless albums and mind-blowing collaborations, this group has pretty much done it all including win a grammy for their efforts. I think to myself "alright, what's this new track going to be?"

A very familiar base line suddenly resounds in my ears with the following words:
Holy crap. Bone Thugs have done a track using 'the chain' melody and portions of its chorus. Forget the fact that the track is unbelievably produced, this is FLEETWOOD MAC. Someone get me a ventilator. The track finishes, I'm stunned to the extent that some fat uncle behind me in a hideous colored ford fiesta has to almost exit his car to shake me out of my catatonic state. I save him the trouble and rev my little zippy towards the awaiting green light up ahead of me. Needless to say, the pumpy RJ who is probably as old as my calvin klein undies reiterates that this is will be one of BT&H's biggest hits with no idea that it's a track over a decade old.
I'm now realizing just what an assault to the senses these remixes can actually be. Sure the track had rhythm and sure it's delictably catchy, but this is literally a classic! I repeat to myself- a classic. Suddenly, the years flash by to all the times I've irritated the creators with my desire to force down their throats a rendition of many such songs. I don't know whether to apologise, shrug my shoulders or just admit - I'm getting old and I'm getting wise. There is pleasure in some antiquities that are not meddled with, nay tainted. Old is gold.
As I say this, my trusty Itunes reminds me that I've heard 'Wind Blow' by Bone Thugs N Harmony a record 9 times over the past 47 minutes. Did I hear someone say Hypocrite? Noone asked you buddy.
Anyway, the new BT&H album is out. Wind blow features on this album which is aptly titled "strength and loyalty". I'm downloading it as we speak and pray silently that it has all the makings of the old school brilliance. Just as long as there are no more of Mac's covers on it.
Or maybe I could do with just one more.
Good night guys. It's been an insane week and I think we all deserve a relaxing weekend. Just listen to the Wind blow and I'll let Layzie Bone wrap it up for you:

Only because we blew up in they face
If was Bone hurtin
If that was the case
I’ll probably go loco and catch me a case
Nigga jus move and give me some space
When I let the wind blow in my face
Nigga don’t quit till I finish the race
Number one is the place
