Prabs, Shashaank n Chitgo: i really wanna know how can we all be basing our conclusions on one game.
S.A scored and won against Aus-Once
India got "thrashed"- Once
Sorry but we are acting like any other critic here, who has to pick any given game n jump to conclusions to the worst.
dont you c, we lack consistency not only in our performances in the field but in our views as well!
I am not any expert here and temme if i m wrong but dont you think we should be a bit more patient, take one game at a time and think about the world cup at least by the end of this year which is really when we would be able to evaluate which team will be doing how in the world cup depending upon their form then!?!?!

Gauri, i am not denying that its early predicting..but good teams have to be consistent. They always have to have their forms high, which means a few players always amongst runs or wickets. Whats happening with our team, is that first sachin, then veeru and now dravid are the ones doing bulk of the scoring. I remember one conference where Kartik was telling us about Australian cricket team and their way of thinking. Their goal is to outplay their opposition in every session of a test. Check the last 15 to 20 tests india have played. how many times have we actually outplayed a team? forget outplaying in sessions. Our team needs to have players (at least 3 or 4 every game) who can stand up and show their "heart". Kumble and Dravid are humans..(sachin and veeru as well) you cant expect them to win every match alone.

and if basing on one match we say that this team looks like winning the world cup, then why shouldnt basing on another match we change our opinions.

interesting points guys. gauri, first off i totally agree with you. our views and our opinions on the 'consistency' of the cricket team should not be as fickle as that of the indian media. my posting:) was purely an update that yes we did get thrashed and in my opinion a drawn test series for a hosting nation is as good as a loss in the series.
following up with shashank's point, I have some thoughts.
first of all, someone in the system needs to step up and make india play less one-day cricket. compared to australia who head into a maximum of 4-5 major series in a year they dont drag themselves into every stupid one-day international tournament there is. India has not reached that dream state where we have 2 equally good test and ODI sides and sooner or later the likes of dravid, veeru, kumble are going to have their bodies give way. heck veeru is already having back spasms.
secondly, there needs to be some globally adopted test cricket ranking- and India needs to be striving for number 1. Its as simple as that. ODI's are and will never be a true imagery of the game and what defines true quality in a team. the indians need to gear themselves up (very much like australia) for bench strength (players nurtured for replacing currently ageing or high injury potential players- like tendulkar as he is now) and focus on one series at a time.
its a much deeper problem then just our current performance....

In my defense, I supported the South African team religiously for a long time. Kepler Vessels, Jhonty, McMillan, Donald, Zulu, Cronje ... those were the dudes!!!!!!! The Hanse Cronje controversy put me off the game for a while. But now the team is back in action and I can't help it!
But I know what you guys mean about the fickleness & high expectations from the Indian cricket team from the media & the die hard supporters of the game. I think BCCI is on a high now, and busy making money and they have the Indian public hooked. I don't think it will be easy to get the BCCI to see things in this light.
DC, I read in the paper today that ICC will have Twenty20 World cup in England in 2007, and its mandatory for all countries to participate. If this format of the game hits the right note in India, then I guess we are going to see more matches and Test cricket will disappear - just a matter of time.

"In my defense"....hahahaha!!!
as, if prabs c!!
anyway, people ... all this dialogue going on between us is going waste.
my plan is: Create a website to showcase live cricket online(which would have the tendency to keep em recorded for future references. This website would make the global discussions of same sort effecient n effective)
Complete AIESEC, get an internship, get into an MBA school, become the sport coordinator(whtever the term for the postion is) and create that globally adopted cricket ranking :)
